7 Important Reasons Why Smiling Is Good For You

It’s a scientific fact that smiling is GOOD for you, both mentally and physically, but I can think of a few reasons why at times we don’t feel like smiling and those precious grins are hidden away.

Whether it’s juggling the kids and work, the run up to Christmas and feeling stressed at the thought of all the additional preparations, or maybe it’s money worries, relationship issues, illness or chronic pain. Whatever ‘stuff’ we’re dealing with, the pressures of daily life can get to us and we forget to smile.

So let’s put our troubles aside for a moment and look at some important reasons why smiling is actually good for us and why breaking into a smile can help. You might be surprised.

Let’s see:

  1. Smiling relaxes your facial muscles, calms the nervous system and reduces stress, boosting your immune system.
  2. Smiling releases serotonin in your brain which helps to balance and improve your mood.
  3. Smiling releases ‘feel good’ endorphins which are natural painkillers thus relieving pain.
  4. Smiling sends a message to your brain to be positive, which tricks your brain into changing your mood. It’s hard to be negative when you smile, try it and see. Even smiling when you don’t feel like it can do the trick.
  5. Smiling helps you to feel confident and to appear more approachable to others.
  6. Smiling makes you look younger by lifting your face and brightening your eyes. (I like this one!)
  7. Smiling might extend into a laugh … and laughing increases oxygen to the brain. A good old chuckle does all of the above and makes us happy!

I came across this little poem on the Internet recently and I thought I’d share it with you today. Unfortunately, I don’t know who wrote it.

Smiling not only makes YOU feel good, it makes OTHERS feel good too … and it’s infectious! So, let’s find those hidden grins, exercise our smiling muscles and start feeling good … and pass it on.
